I received a phone call from a homeowner who was having two separate problems: their laundry room was vibrating when the washer went into the spin cycle and there was a rotten window sill on their sunroom. The window sill was an easy fix, just replicate what was there, remove the old and install the new sill. The homeowner will be sanding, priming and painting the windows and newly installed sill himself.
The laundry room was another issue all together. Several months back the homeowner had purchased a new washer and dryer which are much more efficient than their previous set. This new found efficiency means the washer spins at a higher rate of speed to extract as much water as it can before the clothes are placed in the dryer. A higher rate of speed equals more vibration felt throughout this 25 year old home. Once the problem was pinpointed I headed into the crawl space to figure out a solution.
As it turns out the 2x10s that framed the floor for the laundry room, powder room and hallway above were almost at the maximum span distance for their height. What I needed to do was split the load of the 2×10 that sits under the washer in half to eliminate the vibrations the homeowner was experiencing. I installed a new lolly column under the washer which strengthened the 2×10 eliminating the vibrations.
A returned trip has been planned to install a second lolly column under the neighboring joist to 100% eliminate all of the vibrations the new washer is causing. Take a look at the work that has been completed…
